College & Career Readiness

  • Design Thinking Academy is taking a rigorous, ambitious position on providing scholars with out-of-school college/career prep experiences. A high percentage of DTA scholars are learning beyond the school walls!  The following are just some of the many highlights from the 2017-2018 school year!

There are seven DTA scholars who are participating in Dual School, an out-of-school Design Thinking program that allows students to work on projects of interest/passion. DTA covers all costs.  More DTA students were selected to participate than any other high school.  DTA will offer Dual School (at DTA) this summer. Are you interested?

Twenty-five DTA scholars are taking college courses on college campuses this semester. Twenty-one of these students were selected to take courses at UD.  DTA has more students taking classes on UD’s campus than any other high school.  DTA is covering almost all costs.

We are establishing key, strategic partnerships that provide scholars with rich, robust learning experiences outside of the typical high school classroom- they are pursuing projects of interest, identifying their passions, building social capital, engaging professionals in all fields, and leading efforts to drive social change (e.g., tutoring for elem school students, environmental protection of water bodies, using technology to help with social-emotional health issues).

Three DTA sophomores have been selected to participate in the highly-selective Delaware Scholars Academy, a three-summer pre-college program that has seen amazing outcomes (100% of participants enrolled in four-year colleges). Most other high schools are sending 1-2 students.

Two 9th graders have been accepted to the very competitive Give Something Back Foundation program. These students receive pre-college mentoring through high school and then get a full ride to UD for four years!

Sixteen DTA scholars have been accepted to the six-week Upward Bound program - more than any other high school. This life-changing program provides academic, social, and cultural college prep supports.  DTA is covering costs.

At least five DTA students will attend UD’s College Readiness Scholars Institute, a pre-college program that addresses the key barriers to college success: academics, social, and residential. DTA will cover almost all costs associated with the program.

DTA students have been accepted to UD’s competitive summer Edge program.

DTA students are applying to the Delaware Youth Leadership Network, TeenSHARP, the Delaware Youth Advocacy Council, Delaware Goes to College Academy, and many other college-going programs. DTA is covering almost all costs.

DTA is adding new courses to improve reading/math skills while increasing rigor across the board. We are adding supplemental courses in all subject areas: Spanish I-IV, Journalism, Classical Literature, Holocaust and Genocide, Criminal Justice, Calculus, Psychology (dual enrollment), other dual enrollment options, a second Computer Science AP course, a third and fourth course in Design, a new Media elective, exclusive math and English courses that prevent the need for remedial college courses, and new Entrepreneurship electives.

DTA is offering career pathways that fully align with Design Thinking.  DTA is phasing in a three-course Architectural Engineering program of study next fall. Selected students will actively participate in the design of our new high school.  Our Entrepreneurship pathway is exceptionally liked by students and numerous students are winning large regional/state competitions.

All teachers are receiving extensive professional development and training in preparation for next school year: over 1,100 hours over the summer!!  DTA is planning to offer a summer Design Thinking Camp for students, parents, and staff. We will all work together to solve an important school community concern.  Are you interested in joining us?
