Welcome to DTA!
DTA’s mission is to empower all students to be tomorrow’s innovators and lifelong learners who question, imagine, create, and share every day.
We are excited to share our vibrant and one-of-a kind school community with you. At DTA, we believe that when students are provided personal, meaningful opportunities to engage with content and creative problem solving, learning is authentic and enduring. Our exceptional faculty and staff strive to innovate, collaborate, and refine their craft each and every day, keeping our students and program at the center of all that they do. Our shared goal is to re-imagine the high school experience to best prepare our graduates for the complex, unknown and challenging future landscape.
Our school culture is grounded in high expectations and provides our scholars with a strong academic foundation in fundamental knowledge as essential scaffolding for advanced critical thinking and creative problem solving. We cultivate curiosity, boldly confront tough questions and systematically solve challenging problems every day. The Design Thinking Process, our signature pedagogical approach, is thoughtfully interwoven into each academic course as a framework for creative problem solving. Each and every day, our students work independently and collaboratively to apply their learning and develop original solutions to immediate and relevant challenges in their lives, our school, our community and beyond. When outcomes are not known at the outset, and success no longer hinges on finding one right answer but in discovering multiple solutions, students recognize that they are not just consumers of information--but empowered and creative connective thinkers who imagine, prototype, invent, and solve.
DTA scholars are presented with more out-of-school college prep opportunities than any other Delaware public high school. No other Delaware public high school is more proactively working with its students to open doors to college. We currently have more students taking classes on University of Delaware’s campus than any other high school. At DTA, students gain valuable transferable exposure to creative career opportunities and college programs while still in high school. Our Five Pathway Programs (Art & Design, Media, Architectural Engineering, Entrepreneurship, and Computer Science) allow students to identify and select a personal interest and offers a sequenced track of focused professional coursework. This signature educational opportunity allows students to “major” in a career-focused course of study while enhancing their personal and professional profile for college and career readiness. Our students’ successes are too numerous to list, but among them, some recent highlights include: student acceptance to Give Something Back Foundation program (earning full 4-year scholarships to college), First, Second, and Third Place Winners in the 2018 NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship) Competition, 16 DDLHS scholars accepted to Upward Bound (more than any other DE high school), and students accepted to selective programs such as the Delaware Youth Leadership Network, TeenSHARP, and the Delaware Youth Advocacy Council.
I want to extend a warm welcome to you and your family, and invite you to visit our school community to see for yourself what makes our school so distinctive. Please call to set up your personalized tour, or to schedule a shadow visit day for prospective students, and be sure to check our online calendar for upcoming Admissions events.
